Tired of your foley catheter flopping off your sterile field when preparing for insertion?
If using this type of insertion kit: Instead of squirting the lubricant in the tray, pull the plunger out of the back of the lubricant syringe.
Insert the catheter into the back of the syringe and lay the syringe with the catheter inside back into the tray. You can then cleanse the patient and pull the catheter out of the lubricant when you are ready to insert. The catheter is weighted down and doesn't fall off the sterile field easily with movement. Contents remain sterile and you may decrease the risk of inadvertent contamination.
Disclaimer: Although the end result of lubrication being applied to the catheter is the same, don't use this method in your skills check-off. This method has not been researched for outcomes.
