2008 Strategic Plan

To promote the advancement, development, and safe practice in the specialty of Emergency Nursing throughout the State of Alabama.

Initiative: Position ENA as the source of information for its members on the issue of ED boarding.

Opportunities
Identify opportunities for state and local media coverage on the topic, working with hospital PR departments.

Initiative: Promote a safer work environment for emergency nurses (General Assembly Resolution)

Opportunities
Work with state and local media to publicize 2007 ED Workplace Violence findings.
Encourage members to attend Conference programs

Initiative: Promote the position statements on Weapons of Mass Destruction and Emergency Preparedness related to mitigation, planning, response, and recovery.

Opportunities
Hand deliver the new position statements to Emergency Departments using the network of members within the state.

Initiative: Increase advocacy initiatives relative to the care of psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.

Opportunities
Identify other state/local organizations and team with them to address the issue.

Initiative: Participate in the ongoing recruitment of Alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Champions in all EDs to increase adoption and implementation.

Initiative: Initiate a comprehensive Injury Prevention Program.

Opportunities
Promote injury prevention programs through newsletters, website, council meetings.
Use contacts with senior living companies, youth courts etc to publicize Injury Prevention Programs.
Participate in Injury Prevention teleconference.

Initiative: Support national ENA development of position statement and clinical manager competencies and training requirements.

Opportunities
Encourage ED nurse managers to participate in manager survey.

Initiative:Participate in the ENA resource Specialist Program.

Opportunities
Encourage all state leaders to sign up as a resource specialist.

Initiative: Participate in the State Treasurers teleconference.

Initiative: Develop and administer a State Awards program.

Opportunities
Assure state is doing the right things to qualify for recognition.
Complete the award application process.
Identify categories for emergency nurse awards.

Initiative: Assure state is represented at the Government Affairs Chairs workshop.

Initiative: Promote recognition of Emergency Nurses during Emergency Nurses week.

Initiative: Increase ENA membership.

Opportunities
Increase the number of nurse manager ENA members, their engagement in ENA and the support of their staff involvement in ENA.
Conduct meetings via teleconference.
Increase utilization of web site.

Initiative: Identify legislative key contacts in the State of Alabama.

Initiative: Encourage members to participate in the Educational Needs Assessment.

Initiative: Develop State newsletter.

Initiative: Promote TNCC and ENPC activities.

Opportunities
Disseminate TNCC roll out to all TNCC instructors.
Conduct ENPC courses.

Enhance collaborative relationship with ACEP.
